There’s a law firm for that…

THERE’S A LAW FIRM FOR THAT

Where do you go to be seen? If you are one of the region’s leading law firms, the MaineBiz annual Book of Lists. And that was the right place to reach key regional decision makers with the message that Drummond Woodsum is the kind of law firm that is handy to have around.

We worked with Curvwork to develop this fun concept and ad, another in our series that shows that this isn’t your typical stuffy group of lawyers.

How to fix transportation, now

October 14th, 2010

HOW TO FIX TRANSPORTATION, NOW

Maine Better Transportation Association has developed a policy paper – a kind of “how-to” for Maine’s newly elected legislators and governor. It sets forth four principles for addressing the state’s transportation funding shortfall – now at a two-year total of $720 million and expected to grow to $3 billion over the next 10 years.

Buxton Communications worked with the MBTA and its policy advisor John Melrose to develop a bold, persuasive document that is viewable across many platforms – print, web and mobile device. Download the policy paper here. We also helped publicize the paper’s release. Read some of the coverage here: Maine Trails magazine; the Portland Press Herald; and the Kennebec Journal.

Buxton Communications and client GO MAINE win national marketing award

September 29th, 2010

GO MAINE, BUXTON COMMUNICATIONS AND ENGINE 5 TAKE HOME NATIONAL AWARD

The “GO MAINE Nation” campaign of the GO MAINE Commuter Connections program took second place in the Marketing and Outreach—Public Sector category at the 2010 meeting of the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) in California recently. It was the second time in less than six months that the program has been recognized for marketing excellence.

Award entries were submitted by rideshare and transit programs across the country. First place went to Arlington County Commuter Services in Arlington, Virginia. The GO MAINE Nation campaign was produced for GO MAINE by Buxton Communications of Portland and Engine 5 Design of South Portland.
“We were up against some heavy hitters in the category, including large urban areas,” said Carey Kish, GO MAINE Program Manager. By contrast, GO MAINE has had success attracting more than 8,500 commuters to its program in a largely rural state through a mix of social and traditional media, including e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, radio, web and print advertising. The GO MAINE Nation marketing campaign resulted in a seven percent increase in the commuters enrolled in GO MAINE’s free commuter services and a tripling of traffic on the organization’s web site.
“This recognition strengthens our position as a regional and national leader in transportation demand management,” said Neal Allen, Executive Director of the Greater Portland Council of Governments, the agency that manages the statewide commuter services program. “We also have to thank our funding partners, MaineDOT and Maine Turnpike Authority, for their strong support of the work that GO MAINE does.”
GO MAINE Commuter Connections delivers services to employers and commuters throughout Maine, including carpool and vanpool ridematching. The program also works with employers to set up money-saving commuter benefit programs for their employees.
ACT is an international organization with chapters throughout North America that supports individual mobility management professionals and organizational members in their efforts to reduce traffic congestion, conserve energy and improve air quality.

2009 Maine Turnpike Authority Annual Report

July 5th, 2010

‘ONE HUNDRED AND NINE MILES…’

How do you measure the importance and success of a piece of transportation infrastructure? You show the pivotal role it plays in the region’s economy – and all it takes to maintain it in good working order.

“One hundred and nine miles. One hundred and seventy-six bridges. Nineteen interchanges. Seventy-two million vehicle transactions per year . . . When you look at the sheer numbers involved, maintaining and operating Maine’s most important highway is an enormous responsibility.”

The 2009 Maine Turnpike Authority Annual Report this year looks at the sizable effort required to operate a safe and efficient highway every day.

What’s the worst road in Maine?

June 29th, 2010

WHAT’S THE WORST ROAD IN MAINE? AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

With declining vehicle miles traveled, higher mileage vehicles and the increasing cost of construction materials, Maine’s investment in highways and bridges is falling behind.

Buxton Communications worked with Maine Better Transportation Association to create a contest to find the worst road in Maine – and show how rough roads have a profound effect on safety and mobility for residents and businesses.

The campaign included public relations, a FixMaineRoads.org web site and Facebook social media page and earned media / PR. The MBTA gave out eight prizes and the process earned more than 1,000 Facebook fans and a pile of press coverage on TV (WCSH, WABI and WMTW) on the radio (Maine Public Radio and WVOM) and in print and on the web, including USA Today, the Bangor Daily News and the Associated Press.

Commute another way

June 22nd, 2010

I WANT YOU TO COMMUTE ANOTHER WAY

Since 1994, we have worked with GO MAINE (formerly know as RideShare) to promote low-cost, healthy, green commuting alternatives.

It has worked better than you might think in a rural state like Maine.

This year, we expect 5,000 commuters and more than 800 employers across the state to leave their single occupant car behind and carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or ride the bus to work.

Our favorite piece of the campaign, in addition to the fabulous posters by illustrator Bruce Hutchison and designer Chris Russell are the ZOOMettes in the “Our Story” video. As Wanda says, “What happens on the bus, stays on the bus.” The campaign also has a snazzy theme by musician Gary Richardson and voiceover by Maine humorist Gary Crocker (in addition to PR, radio and ads, print and social media).

Dirigo Slipform

June 16th, 2010

Jay and Heidi Shorette recently purchased Dirigo Slipform, a contracting firm that specializes in granite and slipform concrete curb construction. It was a good time to update their print ads and stress that “curb appeal” is what their business is all about.
